Ecotherapy

In Person in Nature

Ecotherapy offers a way of taking therapeutic work outdoors, allowing the natural environment to become part of the process. For some people, being outside can make it easier to slow down, find space to breathe, notice what is present, and feel a little more connected to themselves and the world around them.

My approach to ecotherapy is integrative, mindful, and trauma sensitive. We may walk, sit, pause, reflect, notice the body, meditate, or pay attention to what draws your awareness in the landscape. There is no right way to be outdoors; the work is shaped around your needs, pace, boundaries, and what feels supportive enough for you.

Ecotherapy can support reflection, grounding, emotional awareness, and a gentler relationship with your body and experience. Like counselling and yoga, it is not about striving or having to get anywhere quickly, but about creating space to listen more deeply, respond with care, and explore what may be unfolding in your life.

Sessions can be adapted to suit you and may sit alongside indoor or online therapy, depending on what feels most accessible and appropriate.

How does an ecotherapy session work?2026-08-14T15:13:54+01:00

Sessions are usually held outdoors and may involve walking together at a comfortable pace or sitting in a suitable natural setting. Like traditional therapy, the focus is on exploring your thoughts, feelings and experiences in a safe, confidential space.

What if the weather is bad?2026-08-14T15:14:15+01:00

Ecotherapy takes place in a range of weather conditions, as spending time outdoors can still be beneficial. However, if the weather becomes unsafe, for example during storms, high winds or icy conditions, we will rearrange the session or move to an agreed alternative if available.

Where do sessions take place?2026-08-14T15:17:17+01:00

Sessions are held in agreed outdoor locations that are quiet, safe and suitable for therapeutic work. The location will be discussed with you before your first appointment.

What should I wear?2026-08-14T15:16:59+01:00

Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for the weather and sturdy footwear. Layers and waterproof clothing are often useful, depending on the season.

Is ecotherapy confidential?2026-08-14T15:13:22+01:00

Yes. The same standards of confidentiality apply as they do in indoor counselling. As sessions take place in public outdoor spaces, we will discuss how we manage the possibility of encountering other people to help maintain your privacy.

What happens if we see someone I know?2026-08-14T15:16:34+01:00

This is something we will discuss before we begin. If we encounter someone you know, I will follow your lead to protect your confidentiality.

Is ecotherapy suitable for everyone?2026-08-14T15:13:09+01:00

Ecotherapy can benefit many people, particularly those experiencing stress, anxiety, low mood, burnout or feeling disconnected. However, it may not be suitable for everyone. We can discuss whether it is the right approach during an initial consultation.

Do I need to be fit or enjoy the outdoors?2026-08-14T15:16:17+01:00

No. You do not need to be particularly fit or have any experience of spending time in nature. Sessions are tailored to your comfort level and physical needs.

Is ecotherapy evidence-based?2026-08-14T15:11:50+01:00

Research suggests that spending time in nature can improve wellbeing, reduce stress and support mental health. Ecotherapy combines these benefits with established therapeutic approaches to create a holistic experience.

Are sessions accessible?2026-08-14T15:15:59+01:00

I aim to choose locations that meet your accessibility needs wherever possible. If you have mobility requirements or any concerns about accessibility, please let me know before we meet so we can plan together.

Can I bring my dog?2026-08-14T15:15:48+01:00

This depends on the location and the therapeutic focus of the session. If you would like to bring a dog, please discuss this with me beforehand.

How long is a session?2026-08-14T15:15:37+01:00

Sessions typically last 50 minutes, although longer sessions may be available by arrangement.
